Ages 5 to 7 are the decoding-to-reading transition years. Most children go from sounding out CVC words (CAT, DOG) to reading short books independently inside this window. It's also when formal arithmetic begins.
The goal at this stage is depth over breadth. Reading the same 10 simple books 5 times produces stronger readers than reading 50 books once. Practicing 5+3 a hundred different ways beats covering 5+3 through 5+9 once each.
Mix direct practice (our games + decodable readers from your library) with real-world application (counting snacks, reading street signs, narrating what you see).
What kindergarten are learning
Decoding CVC and CVCC words
Blending three or four letter sounds into words. CAT, DOG, SIT, FISH. Foundation for reading fluency.
Sight word mastery
Top 100 high-frequency words memorised by sight (the, is, a, was, can, see). Can't be decoded phonetically — must be recognised.
Addition + subtraction within 20
Kindergarten covers to 10; first grade covers to 20. Visual supports (counters, fingers, drawings) still appropriate.
Story comprehension + retelling
Listen to a short story, retell it in order with the main events. Tests literal and inferential thinking.
Independent task completion
A 15-minute self-directed activity without adult cueing. Critical for school readiness.
